Malaysia Airlines plane crashes

The following are significant events involving the airline or its subsidiares. The numbered events are those involving at least one airline passenger death where the aircraft flight had a direct or indirect role, and where at least one of the dead passengers was not a stowaway, hijacker, or saboteur. Only events since 1970 are included.

  1. 4 December 1977; Malaysian Airline System 737-200; near Johore Strait, Malaysia: The aircraft was hijacked and subsequently destroyed by an in flight explosion. All seven crew members and 93 passengers were killed.

  2. 15 September 1995; Malaysia Airlines F50; Tawau, Malaysia: The aircraft touched down at about the 3900 foot (1200 meter) point of a 5600 foot (1700 meter) runway. The crew attempted a go around, but the aircraft settled back down past the perimeter fence where it then crashed into a number of nearby houses. Two of the four crew members and 32 of the 49 passengers were killed.

  3. 8 March 2014; Malaysia Airlines 777-200; 9M-MRO; flight MH370; unknown location: The aircraft was on a scheduled international flight between Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Beijing, China and went missing while en route. The current status and location of the aircraft, along with that of the 227 passengers and 12 crew members who were on board, is unknown. This is a numbered event as defined by AirSafe.com because the aircraft has been missing for more than 30 days, and because there is substantial indirect evidence that one or more passengers were killed.

  4. 17 July 2014; Malaysia Airlines 777-200ER; 9M-MRD; flight MH17; near Grabovo, Ukraine: The aircraft was on a scheduled international flight between Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The aircraft in cruise at about 33,000 feet when it was severely damaged by an explosion from a surface to air missile. The explosion led to a catastrophic in flight breakup. All 283 passengers and 15 crew members were killed.
