Montreal artist, Marc Taro Holmes is the author of four books on art-making.

Most recently, The Apocalypse Variations (2019), a collection of Marc’s 2019 #30x30DirectWatercolor project, and previously, Direct Watercolor (2018), the very best of five years of Marc’s travel sketching in watercolor.

As well, his first book The Urban Sketcher: Techniques for Seeing and Drawing on Location (2014), remains popular among traveling sketchers and journal-keepers and has spun off online course with Craftsy.com.

Marc’s red-headed step-project, Designing Creatures and Characters: How to Build and Artist’s Portfolio for Video Games, Film, Animation and More (2016), is a hands-on workbook based on his 15+ years as an art director and concept artist in video games and feature animation.

Behind the scenes, Marc has been a correspondent and volunteer art instructor with urbansketchers.org, serving as a board member and volunteer editor from 2009-2016.

Marc is a lifetime elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists (2019), and the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolor (2016), recently winning the CSPWC Second Prize Award (2017), and the Sloan Award (2016), and is proud to have been juried into an exhibition-exchange with the Société Française de l’Aquarelle in 2018.

Marc graduated in 1995 with a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary Alberta. He currently lives and works in Montreal, Quebec.
