The AR remake slowly continues with another taking up the reigns:

Looking good! :)

There's an awesome remake of The Dungeon (plus its prequel) on the way at: crpgdev.com/
Check it out!

This game was so thrilling, so ahead of its time back then. Glad I found it again! Like nearly everyone says, one of the best CRPGs ever!

This page really needs a link to the Atari 8-bit version, as it was the original.

This game was the max back the 80s and it still rocks my world! Best RPG ever!

This IS one of the best C64 games ever released. Certainly one of best RPGs ever, and definately the best C64 RPG. Unlike Omicron 5, I think the graphics look great and the keyboard hot-keys are very user-friendly.
This game has such incredible depth and atmosphere. The game also today, is of a very high standard. Vanvincent is right, the game SHOULD be in the top 20!

Thankyou Datasoft!!

To say this game is the best RPG ever written for the C64 is stretching it to say the least.

Visually limited, occupying a fraction of the viewable area. Awkard keyboard movement and command keys. I played this game and IMO it lies in the shadows of 1 person RPG'S such as Questron and Legacy of the Ancients.

I agree Vanvincent! The trouble is, I am allowed only one vote!

C64 owners never had any reason to complain about the quality of the RPGs available for the system (Bard's Tale III and Ultima V come to mind). Even in the face of that competition, AR: the Dungeon is arguably the best of the bunch. Semi-3D dungeons, tons of atmosphere and a great, ongoing plot. This game deserves to be in the top-20, so why isn't everbody who writes comments here voting for it?

Got the C64 version working on VICE: C64, using snapshot facility to save the game. :-)

Yes, Golly, you have found it! But, can you get a copy working properly on an emulator?!

Great comments!

I have been searching for so many years now and I have finally found it!!! I only had The Dungeon, and the only complaint I ever had about this amazingly ahead-of-its-time RPG was when I would reach an entry point to one of the many unmade sequels. How frustrating. The progression of weaponry, monsters and gameplay were at a perfect difficulty curve. I spent far too long on this game in my youth and had they released the sequels, I would still be stuck in front of my old C64. If they would only redo this game...

This game was the most addictive game I have ever played. I had to hide it so I would stop playing it. I found it a year later, and played it until it would load no longer. The games unforgiving save on exit, made it very intense, and the fact that it was easy to die at the begining levels made it all the more challenging. Since I remember it so well after 15 years it must say something about the quality of this game. The best RPG I have ever played.

Another great RPG to the C64!!!

I agree with you all! This game was perfect. A friend and I (in 1989/1990) nearly failed senior high school spending hours mapping this fantastic game! Amazing depth, atmosphere and thrills this!
I tried an emulation version yesterday. ALthough, for some reason it will not work a second time, the first time I got restarted (yesterday) all the wonderful memories came back - brilliant combat/interaction interface!

Commodore 64 Thank You !

Many MANY years ahead of it's time, Alternate Reality: The City and The Dungeon were the most ambitious and compelling games released for the Atari 8-bit and Commodore 64 computers. A concept too huge for the computers of it's time, it's flaws only enhance how true this fact is. A deep rich and utterly engrossing RPG, the best and most under-rated RPG for any computer system. It's a shame it's so hard to get a working version for Commodore 64 emulation.

I loved this game, right from the awesome intro with catchy music. The bouncing ball concept let me sing along (albeit off-key). I never played too far into it, but it was very advanced for its time and still holds up really well. The choices you made affected your personality and how others reacted to you. 'the city' didn't have an ending, the game was spent just levelling up, but as I remember it, the dungeon was much improved and let you do a lot more. What ever happened to the next three games that were never made. :( there was going to be an online game at one time too.

Wow, it was even better than "The City of Xebec's Demise" which was the first installment of Alternate Reality. I never could figure out the answers of the Riddler. Even the first riddle I could get. Any help here would be great.

This game was huge!!!
I still wonder how they managed to stuff so much Story, atmosphere and gameplay in there. Great graphic too. It's a real goody!

This really is one of the best RPGs I've ever played on the C64 or elsewhere. Too bad I've yet to find a version that runs on an emulator.
Nindus 2002-04-21
They should re-do this game on a more sophisticated platform. Could you imagine the same concept with the graphics and capabilities of a PS2? None of today's games even compare. They all concentrate on looks while following a totally linear path. Final Fantasy is one example. No offense.

Www.avatardesign.net/alternatereality is a great website for those of you that really enjoy this game - It's got links to the original Alternate Reality page on the internet from 1994..
Gorac 2002-02-09
I love this game!!! I just wish they would have continued the series like they originally planned too. I believe there was supposed to be a total of like 5 games.
Sinistar 2002-01-31
No shit, I agree 100%!

The most underrated / underappreciated RPG game in the history of RPG's period... A GREAT game...
