Just a few days after coughing up seven runs over 3 2/3 innings last Thursday in his major-league debut against the Tigers, Leiter delivered a dominant performance in his return to the minors. The 24-year-old righty generated a season-high 19 swinging strikes and finished with a stellar 37 percent CSW. He’s posted an astronomical 33/6 K/BB ratio across 20 1/3 frames this season for Triple-A Round Rock.

CLE First Baseman #73

Guardians 1B prospect Kyle Manzardo went 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI on Thursday for Triple-A Columbus.

Manzardo has been on a tear at the dish recently with a trio of three-hit performances and four homers over his last five games. The 23-year-old first baseman is batting a robust .308 (24-for-78) with five homers and 14 RBI in 21 games. It shouldn’t be long before he gets an extended opportunity in Cleveland at the cold corner.

Blue Jays INF prospect Orelvis Martinez launched a three-run homer on Thursday for Triple-A Buffalo.

Martinez has homered seven times in his last nine games and continues to make a compelling case to get the call to Toronto. The 22-year-old slugger is batting .325 (27-for-83) with a 1.060 OPS through 21 games so far.

Tyler Nevin walloped a two-run homer on Thursday, powering the Athletics to a 3-1 victory over the Yankees.

Nevin went deep off Yankees southpaw Nestor Cortes in the third inning for his first round-tripper of the season. It wound up being enough run support for Oakland starter Alex Wood and a quartet of relievers, who combined to limit New York’s lineup to just one run in an impressive victory.

Jose Trevino went 2-for-4 with a solo homer on Thursday in the Yankees’ loss to the Athletics.

New York’s offense mustered only one run despite 11 hits in this one as they went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 men on-base. Trevino was responsible for their lone run with a second-inning homer off Athletics starter Alex Wood. It was his second long ball of the season.
Mason Miller

OAK Starting Pitcher #19

Mason Miller recorded a four-out save on Thursday against the Yankees.

Miller might be the most electrifying pitcher in baseball at the moment. Athletics manager Mark Kotsay handed him the ball for a four-out save opportunity at Yankee Stadium and he immediately responded by striking out Jose Trevino on a 101 mph fastball to end the eighth inning. He came back out to protect a two-run lead in the final frame and recorded two additional strikeouts to successfully work around a one-out infield single from Anthony Volpe. The hard-throwing 25-year-old former top pitching prospect has converted all six of his save opportunities this season to go along with a microscopic 1.59 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 23/4 K/BB ratio across 11 1/3 innings (nine appearances).

OAK Starting Pitcher #57

Alex Wood allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings on Thursday in a win over the Yankees.

Wood was tagged for eight hits, but a second-inning solo shot from Jose Trevino represented the lone tally against him in this one. He struck out five and only issued two walks. He’ll carry an underwhelming 6.59 ERA, 1.98 WHIP and 25/13 K/BB ratio across 27 1/3 innings (six starts) into a home outing on Tuesday against the Pirates.
Nestor Cortes

NYY Starting Pitcher #65

Nestor Cortes was charged with three runs over seven innings on Thursday in a loss to the Dodgers.

Cortes gave up third-inning homers to Nick Allen and Tyler Nevin, which accounted for all of the damage against him in this one, but didn’t get any run support from New York’s offense. The 29-year-old lefty will bring a serviceable 3.50 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 32/5 K/BB ratio across 36 innings (six starts) into a road tilt on Tuesday against the Orioles.
Robert Gasser

MIL Starting Pitcher #85

Brewers LHP prospect Robert Gasser struck out five and allowed one run over four innings on Wednesday for Triple-A Nashville.

Gasser had a real shot at making Milwaukee’s season-opening roster before a bone spur in his left elbow sent him to the shelf in late March. The 24-year-old lefty got back on the mound for the first time since the injury and looked sharp. He figures to make his big-league debut at some point this summer, if not sooner.
Joey Loperfido

HOU First Baseman

Astros 1B/OF prospect Joey Loperfido went 3-for-5 with two solo homers on Wednesday for Triple-A Sugar Land.

Loperfido’s third multi-homer barrage of the season gives him a dozen round-trippers through just 21 games to open the year. The 24-year-old slugger still has some serious contact issues to address, but the stratospheric over-the-fence pop is real. There’s a chance he winds up in Houston in short order, especially if veteran Jose Abreu’s early-season struggles persist.
