The purpose of this website is to educate, inspire as well as offer my services. My name is Charles Roebling, I own and operate Kinetic Neuromuscular Therapy. We are based in Matthews, NC a thriving town Southeast of beautiful Charlotte, NC. I have been a runner for many years, and also play Volleyball fairly competitively (ok, I try). I have learned much over the course of many years as a Licensed Massage Therapist and Corrective Exercise Specialist studying a variety of disciplines which has not only allowed me to help many others, but it has taken me through my own rehabilitation journey as well.
Let’s talk a bit about Chronic pain affects roughly 20-25% of Americans with some pretty harsh impacts. Social Isolation, Depression, Anxiety, and other health consequences that come from a less active lifestyle. Roughly 90% of the population will suffer from Lower back pain and 40% of the population will suffer from shoulder impingement at some point in their lives (National Academy of Sports Medicine). These statistic show that pain is rampant and can have many causes. Some do, but many causes fail to show up in Diagnostic Imaging. However causes can be from Degenerative Diseases, Neurological Conditions, Traumatic Injries and Autoimmune Diseases are examples of pain conditions with more clearly diagnosable causes. However, some pain flies under the radar and is swept under the rug. One of the most leading causes of mild to moderate nagging Neck Pain, Shoulder Pain, Headaches, Back Pain, Knee, Foot and ankle pain can stem from Musculoskeletal Imbalances. These imbalances can occur as a result of incomplete injury rehab; a sedentary lifestyle; repetitive motion injuries; an incomplete physical training regimen (I.E. too much running, working the vanity muscle trifecta in the gym (chest, arms and abs); too much time behind a computer screen; and too many long hours at jobs that require a lot of standing or physical labor (Construction, Healthcare).
Now that we know about the prevalence of pain, and a few potential causes. Let’s talk a little about the human body. The primary components of the Musculoskeletal System are muscles and bones. Easy enough, right? Well there are 206 bones and are you ready for this??? There are 640 Skeletal Muscles! That is just based on the average adult male. Other data suggests that there may be up to 680 Skeletal muscles in the human body. Some are better known than others. We can divide these muscles into two categories. The Global Muscular System (the ones you see On the charts at the gym). The Global Muscular system is comprised of Large muscle groups, typically lying closer to the surface of the body They usually have more space between attachments, and cover a larger surface area. Their primary purpose is to be stronger joint movers. Examples would include your abs, your Gluteus Maximus, your Pectoralis Major, your Thigh Muscles and your Spinal Erectos.. Next is a group called your Localized Muscular System. These muscles cover less surface area, their attachments are closer together, and while they do have joint movement functions, they tend to act more as joint and skeletal stabilizers. They tend to lie closer to the network of sensory nerves that spread throughout the body. They tend to be more of the primary target of deeper styles of Massage and Bodywork. They also tend to be culprits of pain. Examples of these would be your Pectoralis Minor (another chest muscle), your Quadratus Lumborum (your deepest abdominal that is accessed from the lower back), and the muscles of the Rotator Cuff.
Still awake? Great! Next, let’s talk about how your body moves. You have your Sagittal Plane. This plane involves flexing and extending a joint. Think raising, your arm straight up over your head, then down to your side and reaching straight back. or getting up out of your chair. Next you have your Coronal or Frontal Plane. This involves abduction and addiction of a joint. Think raising your arm to the side like you are spreading your wings or a defensive player in basketball side shuffling, while covering their opponent.. Next you have your Transverse Plane. This involves rotation of a joint. Think of make a circle or a C. Joint movements in the Transverse plane include arm circles, rolling your neck, or turning your hip toward the outside. Now while our lives revolve around mostly Movement in a Sagittal or Linear Plane. Stabilization and movement in other planes is essential for healthy posture, joints, and movement.
By and large since our lifestyles revolve around Sagittal Plane movements. Good posture is defined as sitting up straight. Bending down and touching your toes is a stretch. We attempt to rehab our posture, and stiff backs by strengthening our core by way of plans, crunches, Supermans. As massage therapists we tend to move up and down in our flow focusing on the layout of the muscles that exist closer to the surface and that are most easily accessible from our position. Muscles that lie along the rib cage, to the side or in the front of the body are commonly neglected. That being said, there is nothing inherently wrong with these approaches, and at times it can be extremely helpful for some.
At Kinetic Neuromuscular Therapy our goal is to offer an integrative approach to Performance, Postural and Movement Therapy. We believe that no two problems are exactly the same. We utilize an assess, treat, re-educate, and retest approach to problem solving.
We want to be your Teacher and Faciltator. We want to be your Spot for Effective Bodywork and safe workout programming. Regardless of your condition there is almost always something that you can do.
