I was in one during the mid-1960s in Europe during which 24th Infantry out of Augsburg was *containing* the aggressors from 10th SFG at Toelz/Prinz Heinrich. And a German forester, a WWII mountain jaeger vet, offered his local knowledge of the exercise area to the 24th Inf Div staff...and was laughed at: after all, the Amis had won the war, and needed neither help nor advice from the losers.

And as things turned out, he found instead his way into the path of the lads in the girl scout hats. And they not only gratefully accepted his offer, they did so in his own language. And addressed him by his former rank, and in the course of things, gave him one of their hats. And before even a weekend had passed, they had every company and battalion CP and TOC spotted on their maps, along with the location of the 24 INF divisional command post. To which their new friend had been a visitor, and made a close-enough sandtable model for their planning. They even invited him along on the raid.

One minor problem: there were no blanks available for his sporterized K98k Mauser hunting rifle. Which he overcame by using live rounds, including several fired into wheeled command vehicle tires and a couple of pretty expensive bits of radio gear. The story that one of his rounds came within a foot of division commander Major General Cunningham's head is probable, though the story about it bouncing off the CGs helmet is an exaggeration. Probably.

After *that SF medic* began his book writing career, we crossed paths and he mentioned that he didn't even have a copy of the LP album on which *that Green Beret Song appeared [actually, a couple of the other songs are IMH Opinion, better ones] and I gave him my second copy, still sealed with the cellophane wrapper intact. I thought he was gonna cry. Which I hate, 'cause it makes the beer taste salty.
