Logic X on a Mac Mini?

Recommended Posts

Good evening. New to the forum but a long time user of Logic.

My early 2007 Mac Pro is about ready for retirement and while I really like the look of the new ones I'm not in the mood to spend $3K + right now. I'm thinking about a new Mac Mini. I can fully load one for about half the cost of a new, baseline Mac Pro.

My question to the forum: is anyone running Logic X (or Ableton Live 9) on a Mac Mini? Will I see a big difference in performance between my old Mac Pro's 2x2.66 Ghz dual-core Intel Xeon and the new Mac Mini's 2.6 Ghz quad-core Intel Core i7?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Go for it. The mac mini is a great affordable option, especially the i7 version.

I got a mini recently. It definitely rocks.

Also the Mini Server gives you 2 internal drives, which for logic is a bonus.

The current server model comes with two 5400 RPM drives. That's not so great.

I got the non-server model (i7 quad-core 2.3GHz) and took out its single 5400 RPM drive and put in a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro as the main drive and a 1TB 7200 RPM drive as the secondary drive. It's great like that (a secondary SSD wouldn't be a bad choice either if you can afford it).

However, putting in your own drives in a mini is a challenging task. You have to be into taking things apart.

+1 for the MacMini. I purchased it with the SSD pre-installed because I didn't want to fool around with taking the thing apart. I did upgrade the RAM to 16 GBs on my own, though. Doing that is relatively easy. The MacMini is a great machine. I purchased two USB3 external SSDs, one to house the instrumental libraries and the other for projects. At least for my modest needs, it's a winning set-up. FWIW, I have it "networked" in with my now-aging MacPro via VEPro to access more instrumental libraries for the MacMini. Again, it's a winning combination. It's a set-up that should serve me well for the next few years in working with audio and video projects.

instead of going threw all the hassle of changing the drives would it not be possible to just buy an external drive running at 7200 and use that to run logic from? My 2006 mac book pro is on it's last legs and i am also not in the mood to spend too much and a mac mini would be the perfect solution to my recording needs if it worked?

Logic needs to run from the main system drive. You can't run it from an external drive.

Maybe he means running the audio tracks from an external drive. ( Or storing the samples lib on it ).

That's what I do.

All apps and sys on the internal SSD 840 pro 512 g. The audio stuff on the original internal 1T HD.

All is running so smooth.

Don't remember if the internal stock HD is 5400 or 7200 rpm, but I never had any problems of audio lags .

What I have noticed is that the internal Sata connexion is faster than an external FW hd.

Even an Usb 3 I think .

Well, by the hand, I can confirm that a MacMini well tuned is perfect for Logic.

The late 2012 one is the most powerful, apart graphic card .
